Boley Tree Care - Newsletter
10/26/2000, 11:42 am Fall Update Fall needle drop is a natural process that occurs every year on evergreen (conifer) trees. This is a natural process and is not caused by fungal organisms found in other parts of the country. What is fall needle drop? Evergreens do not retain all of their needles indefinitely. For example, Ponderosa pine drops needles each year that are three to five years old. These older needles are the inner most ones toward the main trunk. Other evergreens may have needle lifespans of two to 17 years, depending on the species. What does fall needle drop look like? The inner needles will turn brilliant yellow in spruce and tan in pine. This coloration develops rapidly during this time of year. The needles will stay attached to the branch up until winter and then fall. Is there anything that needs to be done?
No, there isn't. We suggest that you take a walk around your
neighborhood and observe
other evergreens. You will soon see that your neighbors'
trees' look the same as yours. A
